Why does electronic speed not automatically create a usable computer?

Electronic components accelerated operations, but representation, sequencing, debugging, I/O, and mapping a mathematical method onto hardware remained difficult programming work performed across large teams.

A computer’s capability is the joint product of device physics, architecture, mathematical method, programming, operation, and maintenance.

Reconstruct the mechanism

1. Choose a mathematical method and numeric representation
2. Map operations and data movement onto available hardware
3. Encode sequencing through wiring, switches, tape, or stored control
4. Run, observe, diagnose, and repair the whole operation graph

Map a differential-equation step onto an ENIAC-style operation graph, create a plugboard schedule, and diagnose one mistimed connection.

Evidence and uncertainty

Priority claims depend on definitions such as electronic, programmable, digital, general-purpose, completed, and operational. State the scope instead of declaring one “first computer.”
