1995 — Turn participation into a market

Amazon, eBay, Google, Alibaba, and Internet feedback loops

Turn participation into a market

Internet firms coordinated buyers, sellers, publishers, advertisers, and information at global scale. Search quality attracted queries; queries attracted advertisers and behavioral evidence; marketplaces attracted sellers because buyers were present and vice versa. When the user does not fund the product directly, the measured customer and optimized outcome can split.

A platform compounds when participation improves value for another participant, but the money flow determines whose outcome the institution will optimize under pressure.

Institutional reconstruction

Draw actors, value flows, money flows, and reinforcing loops for one marketplace or search engine. Name a metric that improves revenue while degrading the user outcome, then design a counter-metric.

Trace the scarce resource, coordination mechanism, power boundary, and newly possible failure.
