Productive struggle, hints, and transfer
An exercise samples a boundary of your model.
Classify the task before solving: recall, routine application, proof, design, debugging, or transfer. Attempt from a blank state, record the exact point of failure, then request the smallest hint that restores motion. After solving, vary a constraint or generate a counterexample so the method is not tied to the original surface form.
A solution manual is most useful after you can name your failed step.
Difficulty must be calibrated, not worshipped.
Productive struggle requires a solvable search space and timely feedback. If prerequisites are missing, repeated failure rehearses confusion. If hints reveal the whole path, the learner performs transcription. Adjust task size, make state visible, and preserve the step that demands the target reasoning.
The best hint changes what you can notice without completing the thought for you.
