Build a personal course from a book
Selection, projects, retrieval, and synthesis
A textbook is a resource graph; your goal determines the route.
Few learners need every chapter at equal depth. Define the capability you want, map prerequisite chapters, choose representative exercises, and attach a project that forces ideas to interact. Schedule cumulative retrieval across old and new material, then finish with an artifact or explanation that can be judged against explicit criteria.
Completion should mean a changed capability with evidence, not a closed cover.
A project can hide weak understanding behind working dependencies.
Libraries and copied examples may produce output without revealing why it works. Add checkpoints that require prediction, tracing, modification, failure diagnosis, and explanation without the source. Keep the project small enough that the target mechanism remains visible rather than disappearing inside setup.
The build is evidence only when you can explain and deliberately change the mechanism.
