Unknowns, failed approaches, hints, and recovery
Strong interview recovery makes uncertainty observable and bounded.
When stuck, restate the contract, reduce to a tiny example, list what is known, and identify the exact decision you cannot make. A useful hint should repair that inference without revealing the entire path. Afterward, classify whether the gap was prerequisite knowledge, representation, invariant, implementation, testing, or communication, then practice that capability under a changed surface.

Candidates often code before agreeing on semantics, switch approaches without preserving progress, or narrate every keystroke. Use short decision checkpoints: contract, representation, invariant, complexity, and verification. Silence while thinking is acceptable when you announce the question being resolved and return with a reasoned choice.
