A prototype is not a company
ENIAC knowledge emerged from a university and military project, but Eckert and Mauchly still had to finance manufacturing, integration, sales, software, and support. Remington Rand acquired their company before UNIVAC was complete. Ferranti commercialized university work in Britain; J. Lyons built LEO around its own logistics. The cases expose the missing middle between a working demonstration and a dependable institution that a customer can trust with real work.
