Build a research engine
Bell Labs joined fundamental research to the operating problems of a continent-scale telephone system. Stable funding, long time horizons, manufacturing capability, and contact between theorists and field engineers helped produce the transistor, information theory, Unix, and C. The conclusion is not that monopolies automatically innovate. It is that research output depends on how surplus, mission, talent, deployment paths, and feedback from the real system are organized.
A laboratory becomes an invention engine when patient funding, a consequential mission, diverse expertise, and a credible path into production reinforce one another.
