## 1. Historical orientation

Marvin Minsky (1927–2016) was a broad and provocative AI researcher who co-founded MIT's Artificial Intelligence Laboratory with John McCarthy. With Dean Edmonds he built SNARC, an early neural-network learning machine; his later work ranged from frames and robotics to the Society of Mind, which explained intelligence as interaction among many simpler agents. The 1969 book Perceptrons, written with Seymour Papert, rigorously analyzed limits of single-layer perceptrons but is often blamed too simply for an AI winter. Funding, hardware, data, research fashion, and the book's reception all mattered. Minsky's contribution is best taught as competing architectures and questions, not a single unified mechanism.

Researchers lacked an architecture explaining how perception, memory, planning, language, and common sense could combine into flexible intelligence.

## 3. The central contribution

Minsky advanced multiple mechanistic models—early learning networks, frame-based knowledge, and societies of specialized agents—while helping create institutions in which AI became a sustained field.

## 4. Reconstruct the mechanism

1. Decompose a difficult cognitive capability into specialized agents that each recognize or perform a limited condition-action pattern.
2. Organize agents into layers and coalitions so some activate, suppress, or redirect others according to context.
3. Represent stereotyped situations with frames containing slots, defaults, and links to related knowledge.
4. Produce adaptive behavior through changing local connections or control relationships rather than locating intelligence in one central rule.

## 5. What changed downstream

- MIT AI Lab became a major center for robotics, language, vision, programming, and hacker culture.
- Frames influenced knowledge representation, while Society of Mind anticipated modular and multi-agent explanations.
- Perceptrons clarified expressivity limits and made representation a central learning-theory issue.

## 6. Attribution, limits, and uncertainty

- McCarthy co-founded the lab; Edmonds, Papert, students, engineers, and other collaborators must remain visible.
- Society of Mind is a conceptual research program, not a complete tested implementation of human cognition.
- The claim that Minsky and Papert alone 'killed neural networks' is historically reductionist, and multilayer networks overcome some analyzed limits.

## 7. Reconstruction lab

Show that a single linear threshold unit cannot compute XOR by plotting its four inputs, then build a two-layer network that can. Separately design five simple agents for a block-stacking task and document a conflict that requires higher-level control.
