## 1. Historical orientation

Joseph Engelberger (1925–2015) turned George Devol's patented programmable article-transfer concept into an industrial robotics business. After meeting Devol, he licensed the patent, co-founded Unimation, oversaw engineering and sales, and persuaded manufacturers to install Unimate arms for hazardous repetitive work such as handling hot die-cast parts. Devol supplied the foundational patent; Engelberger's central role was systems engineering, commercialization, and building a market and professional field. The label 'father of robotics' is an honorific that obscures earlier automata, Devol, Unimation engineers, and international robotics work. The consequential mechanism was a repeatable, programmable sequence controlling a powered manipulator in a structured factory environment.

## 2. The problem inherited

Factories needed to move hot, heavy, or repetitive workpieces reliably, but fixed automation was inflexible and human exposure to die-casting and welding tasks was dangerous.

## 3. The central contribution

Engelberger organized the development and adoption of Unimate, translating Devol's programmable manipulator patent into maintained industrial equipment, customer applications, and a robotics industry.

## 4. Reconstruct the mechanism

1. Use a multi-jointed hydraulic arm and end effector sized for the reach, load, and hazards of a specific work cell.
2. Teach or encode a sequence of joint positions and actions in the controller's memory rather than machining a new fixed mechanism.

## 5. What changed downstream

- Unimate's 1961 General Motors deployment became a landmark in industrial robot adoption.
- Programmable manipulators spread through automotive welding, material handling, painting, and assembly.
- Engelberger later advocated service and healthcare robotics beyond fenced factory cells.

## 6. Attribution, limits, and uncertainty

- George Devol was the patent holder and original inventor of the programmed article-transfer concept; Engelberger licensed and developed it.
- Early industrial robots had little perception or general intelligence and worked best in highly structured, guarded environments.
- Automation can reduce hazardous exposure while also redistributing jobs, bargaining power, surveillance, and safety risks.

## 7. Reconstruction lab
