## How to use this dossier

Read for a causal chain, not a hero story: inherited problem → contribution → mechanism → downstream capability → limit. Then close the page and complete the reconstruction exercise from memory.

## 1. Historical orientation

Changpeng Zhao, widely known as CZ, founded the cryptocurrency exchange Binance in 2017 after work on trading and cryptocurrency systems. Binance grew into a globally significant exchange and ecosystem. This history must include governance: Zhao resigned as CEO after pleading guilty in 2023 to causing Binance to violate the U.S. Bank Secrecy Act by failing to maintain an effective anti-money-laundering program.

## 2. The problem inherited

Cryptocurrency holders needed liquid markets, custody, matching, settlement, and access across many blockchain assets, but exchanges also had to manage security, customer identity, market integrity, and differing national rules.

## 3. The central contribution

Zhao founded and scaled Binance's high-volume crypto-asset marketplace and associated platform ecosystem, making exchange infrastructure a central gateway to cryptocurrency use.

## 4. Reconstruct the mechanism

1. Maintain customer accounts and custody mappings for assets recorded on multiple blockchains.
2. Accept orders into matching engines that pair buyers and sellers under price-time rules.
3. Update internal ledgers quickly while batching deposits and withdrawals through external chains.
4. Apply—or fail to apply—identity, sanctions, market-surveillance, security, and compliance controls at the gateway.

## 5. What changed downstream

- Binance expanded global liquidity and access across crypto assets and products.
- Its legal history demonstrated that software scale does not displace financial governance, anti-money-laundering duties, or accountable control.

## 6. Attribution, limits, and uncertainty

- The exchange is the work of many engineers and operators; founder status does not establish authorship of its trading or security mechanisms.
- 'Largest' depends on date and metric. The 2023 guilty plea and compliance failures are material to evaluating the institution, not an optional biographical aside.

## 7. Reconstruction lab

Model an exchange ledger for deposits, two matched trades, a withdrawal, and a chain reorganization. Add identity and sanctions checks and identify which states require human or legal judgment. Prove conservation of customer assets on the internal ledger separately from proof that blockchain wallets contain funds. Simulate a compromised withdrawal credential and specify delay, rate-limit, and multisignature controls. Then compare exchange custody with self-custody across recovery, censorship, counterparty, and key-loss risks. This distinction is historically essential: Binance made crypto access and liquidity easier through centralized intermediation, while that very concentration reintroduced governance and compliance dependencies cryptocurrency was often said to avoid.
