## 1. Historical orientation

Marc Ewing created Red Hat Linux and co-founded Red Hat with Bob Young in the 1990s. The company showed how freely licensed software could support a durable business through curated distributions, testing, support, certification, training, and relationships with enterprise hardware and application vendors. This profile belongs to computing history because institutional choices changed how technology was financed, produced, distributed, governed, or made available to complementors. 4. Audit forkability, trademark, subscription gates, supply-chain trust, community–enterprise tension, and maintenance cost. Remove a complementor, subsidy, channel, standard, or leadership decision and predict whether the system still scales.

## 5. What changed downstream

- Red Hat helped make Linux credible enterprise infrastructure and established a prominent open-source subscription and services model.
- The result altered which technical projects could survive long enough to become infrastructure and where power accumulated around their interfaces.

## 6. Attribution, limits, and uncertainty
