## 1. Historical orientation

Jimmy Wales co-founded Wikipedia with Larry Sanger after the expert-written Nupedia project proved slow. Wikipedia combined a wiki’s low-friction editing with revision history, talk pages, policies, volunteer governance, and nonprofit stewardship to build a reference work at global scale. ## 5. What changed downstream

- Wikipedia became major public knowledge infrastructure and demonstrated that transparent peer production can outperform centralized authoring on breadth and update speed.
- The result altered which technical projects could survive long enough to become infrastructure and where power accumulated around their interfaces.
