## How to use this dossier

Read for a causal chain, not a hero story: inherited problem → contribution → mechanism → downstream capability → limit. Then close the page and complete the reconstruction exercise from memory.

## 1. Historical orientation

Paul Allen (1953–2018) and Bill Gates founded Microsoft after recognizing that inexpensive microcomputers would need programming languages and eventually a broad software platform. Allen helped secure and implement the Altair BASIC opportunity, named the company, and shaped its early technical and business direction before leaving day-to-day work in 1983. This profile belongs to computing history because institutional choices changed how technology was financed, produced, distributed, governed, or made available to complementors. The chronology is used causally: it connects the inherited constraint to an implementable mechanism and then to later reuse, instead of treating fame, job title, or eventual market success as the explanation.

## 2. The problem inherited

Hobbyist microcomputers arrived with little accessible software, limited memory, and no established independent software market connecting one vendor’s program to many machines. A technical possibility does not scale itself. Organizations must align capital, labor, supply, standards, distribution, maintenance, and decision rights while absorbing risk over time.

## 3. The central contribution

Microsoft’s early mechanism combined a compact BASIC implementation, licensing rather than only one-off sale, and later an operating-system platform supplied across hardware manufacturers. The central mechanism is therefore an institutional and technical system: a product or platform boundary, an operating model, and the incentives surrounding it.

## 4. Reconstruct the mechanism

1. Identify a new hardware installed base whose usefulness is constrained by missing software. Name the scarce technical or distribution resource and the actors who initially controlled it.
2. Implement a language within severe memory limits and deliver it on the target machine. Trace the product, contract, standard, or platform rule that coordinated those actors.
3. License the software across manufacturers so distribution scales beyond one hardware product. Follow revenue, data, switching cost, operational risk, and decision authority through one real transaction.
4. Trace how platform compatibility, contracts, piracy concerns, and bargaining power shift as the installed base grows. Remove a complementor, subsidy, channel, standard, or leadership decision and predict whether the system still scales.

## 5. What changed downstream

- Microsoft helped establish software as a separately licensable business and later made its platform a coordination layer for PC manufacturers and application developers.
- The result altered which technical projects could survive long enough to become infrastructure and where power accumulated around their interfaces.
- The transferable first-principles lesson is to separate the artifact named in “Co-founded Microsoft” from the mechanism, surrounding institution, and evidence that allowed later systems to depend on it.

## 6. Attribution, limits, and uncertainty

- Allen was co-founder and an important early programmer and strategist; Gates, Monte Davidoff, employees, MITS, Seattle Computer Products, IBM, OEMs, and developers were also causal. Later Microsoft dominance should not be projected backward onto every early decision.
- Founder and executive narratives compress the work of engineering teams, predecessors, suppliers, public institutions, competitors, and users.
- The lifespan is historical, but exact priority and influence still require the precision supported by the cited record rather than inference from chronology alone.

## 7. Reconstruction lab

Model the 1975 Altair BASIC opportunity: memory budget, implementation labor, licensing choices, hardware sales, and piracy. Compare a one-time sale with per-machine licensing over three manufacturers. Draw both the technical stack and the institutional stack, then defend a counterfactual with sources rather than personality.
