Mary Allen Wilkes (born 1937) programmed the LINC, an interactive laboratory computer created at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and developed further at Washington University in St. Louis. She designed the LAP6 operating system and worked on a LINC at her parents' home in 1965, making her one of the earliest documented people to use a computer in a private residence. Calling her the first home-computer user depends on definitions and should remain qualified. Wilkes later left computing for law. Her technical significance lies in programmer-centered operating software for an unusually personal, interactive machine used by biomedical researchers.

## 6. Attribution, limits, and uncertainty

- Wesley Clark led LINC design and a substantial team built its hardware and software.
- 'First home computer' is definition-sensitive because the LINC was institutional equipment temporarily installed in a residence.
- LINC was expensive specialized equipment, not yet a consumer-owned mass-market personal computer.
