## 1. Historical orientation

Theodor 'Ted' Nelson (born 1937) coined hypertext and hypermedia and pursued Project Xanadu, a radical alternative to document systems built around stable identity, bidirectional links, version history, and transclusion. Unlike today's Web, Xanadu envisioned quotations as live references to original material, links visible from both ends, and a publishing/payment architecture preserving provenance. Nelson was not the first to imagine associative information—Vannevar Bush and Engelbart are central predecessors—and Xanadu's complete vision was never broadly deployed. Its value is diagnostic: it shows that broken links, copying without context, and one-way navigation are design choices, not inevitable properties of digital text.

## 2. The problem inherited

Paper and file metaphors duplicate passages, lose provenance, and make references one-way and fragile even though digital information could preserve connections and versions.

## 3. The central contribution

Nelson named nonsequential linked media and specified an ambitious architecture in which content has stable identity, quotations remain connected to origins, and links are first-class bidirectional objects.

## 4. Reconstruct the mechanism

1. Assign persistent identities to content units and retain prior versions instead of overwriting them invisibly.
2. Create links as stored relationships with known source and destination endpoints, allowing reverse-link discovery.
3. Transclude a referenced range into a new document while preserving its connection to the original bytes and attribution.
4. Resolve views dynamically from identities, links, versions, and permissions rather than copying independent fragments.

## 5. What changed downstream

- Hypertext and hypermedia became standard terms for interactive linked information.
- Xanadu influenced debates about provenance, digital rights, versioning, and the Web's missing features.
- Nelson's critique encouraged designers to distinguish navigation structures from document storage.

## 6. Attribution, limits, and uncertainty

- Bush, Engelbart, and other hypertext researchers supplied important prior and parallel concepts.
- Xanadu's full architecture accumulated technical, organizational, economic, and usability complexity and did not reach mass adoption.
- Persistent identity and transclusion raise hard questions about deletion, privacy, ownership, moderation, and offline access.

## 7. Reconstruction lab

Build a tiny document store with immutable versions, stable passage IDs, bidirectional links, and transclusion. Edit the source after two documents quote it; display old and new views and define a policy for attribution and deletion.
