## How to use this dossier

Read for a causal chain, not a hero story: inherited problem → contribution → mechanism → downstream capability → limit. Then close the page and complete the reconstruction exercise from memory.

## 1. Historical orientation

Edward Fredkin (1934–2023) was a computer scientist, entrepreneur, and advocate of digital physics whose technically durable work centers on reversible computation. The Fredkin gate is a three-bit controlled-swap operation: it preserves the number of one bits, is logically reversible, and can be combined to perform universal classical computation without erasing information at every step. Reversibility matters because Landauer's principle associates unavoidable heat with logically irreversible information erasure. Fredkin did not originate every element—Rolf Landauer, Charles Bennett, Tommaso Toffoli, and others are central—and his stronger claim that the universe is fundamentally cellular/digital remains speculative.

## 2. The problem inherited

Ordinary logic gates discard input information, creating a thermodynamic lower bound on heat for erasure and making it unclear whether computation can in principle avoid that loss.

## 3. The central contribution

Fredkin developed a conservative reversible gate and promoted models in which computation is one-to-one, allowing outputs and retained information to reconstruct inputs.

## 4. Reconstruct the mechanism

1. Take one control bit and two target bits as the three inputs to a Fredkin gate.
2. Leave the targets unchanged when the control is zero and swap them when the control is one.
3. Observe that every output has exactly one predecessor and the number of one bits is conserved.
4. Compose gates while retaining temporary information, then uncompute intermediate garbage to recover workspace without irreversible erasure.

## 5. What changed downstream

- Reversible logic became foundational to quantum circuits and ultra-low-energy computing theory.
- The Fredkin gate supplied a concrete universal conservative-logic building block.
- Digital-physics debates encouraged computational models of physical law, even where their ontological claims remain unproven.

## 6. Attribution, limits, and uncertainty

- Landauer supplied the thermodynamic principle, Bennett developed reversible simulation, and Toffoli proposed another universal reversible gate.
- Logical reversibility alone does not eliminate real heat from control, noise, finite-speed switching, or error correction.
- Digital physics and computational cosmology are philosophical/research hypotheses, not established consequences of the gate.

## 7. Reconstruction lab

Write the eight-row truth table of a Fredkin gate, reverse every output, and use gates to implement AND while preserving enough garbage bits for reversibility. Uncompute the garbage and count which bit, if discarded, would incur logical erasure.
