## 1. Historical orientation

Morris Chang (born 1931) is an engineer and executive who founded Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company in 1987 after a career at Texas Instruments and work in Taiwan's technology institutions. TSMC committed to being a pure-play foundry: it manufactures chips designed by customers rather than competing with them through a branded product line. Contract semiconductor manufacturing existed before TSMC, so 'invented the foundry' is too absolute; Chang's achievement was making the dedicated model trusted, technologically leading, and economically scalable. The result separated capital-intensive fabrication from chip design and enabled many fabless companies, while also creating geographic and supply-chain concentration.

## 2. The problem inherited

Advanced fabrication plants demanded enormous investment, preventing small design teams from building chips and making potential customers wary that an integrated manufacturer might appropriate or compete with their designs.

## 3. The central contribution

Chang established a neutral, dedicated foundry business whose process technology, confidentiality, design interfaces, and pooled production capacity let independent firms bring chip designs to market.

## 6. Attribution, limits, and uncertainty

- Foundry services and merchant fabrication had precedents; TSMC industrialized a dedicated model rather than creating it from nothing.
- TSMC's results depend on engineers, suppliers, public policy, customers, and a highly skilled workforce, not founder action alone.
- Concentration improves scale but produces geopolitical, disaster, energy, water, and systemic supply risks.
