## Appendix: Handling Uncertainty

> **Note on Sources:** Pāṇini lived ~2,500 years ago. There are no contemporary biographical documents. What we know derives from: (1) internal evidence in the _Aṣṭādhyāyī_ (place names, social context references); (2) later Sanskrit tradition, which often embroidered biography with legend; (3) Chinese pilgrim accounts from ~1,000 years later. The dates "~520–460 BCE" are scholarly consensus but have margins of +/- 50 years.
